The Fringe Continues!

The Greater Manchester Fringe Festival begins to approach it’s 3rd week with a slew of performances and wonder already having been displayed.  From the freestyle comedy at sandbar to the acclaimed live renditions of TV dramas and plays at the Lass O’ Gowrie - you really can say the first Greater Manchester Fringe Festival is in full swing.

Other hightlights include ‘The house that stank of death!’ over at Satan’s Hollow, a multimedia horror experience of various tales as well as the wide range of plays on offer at The Kings Arms including “Staffroom” (check out the video teaser above).

For full calendar and updates check out the GMFF website or join the GMFF facebook group.

Film Tube is back… Tomorrow in your face with wonder…

Yup.  That’s right.  Film Tube slinks back into sandbar with it’s rugged, haphazard style which some of you are familiar with.  What is Film Tube you may ask?  Film Tube is a video/animation/clip/film event without the fuss or prestige of film screenings.  Don’t like what’s on?  Talk to your mates.  Heckle the screen.  Film Tube is NOT a cinema experience, and it embraces that fact.

What can you expect to be screened?  Well here’s a list of somethings which we have screened before:

If these things tickle your fancy pop down tomorrow (Wednesday 30th, 8pm) to catch the new show reel.  Film Tube runs the last Wednesday of every month!  Check out it’s (out of date but soon to be updated) blog here.

Trauma Gets Criminal… in a Frenchie way…

Trauma screenings is here with a new season of crime… French crime that is.  Kicking of yesterday with the impressive Un Propthete, Kathleen Menzies presents a selection of French based cinema exploring the roots of it’s inspirations.  Be sure to check out the full program here.  Also, when Kathleen isn’t presenting film seasons or doing her PhD research she’s writing in her blog about observations, cultural events and whatnottery of her experince in Manchester so far.  Have a browse here.

Trauma is a free entry film screening, every Monday at 6pm.  They are usually held in MMU lecturer theatre in All Saints building near Manchester Metropolitan University.  Consult their website however as sometimes the screenings can be held in different venues in the area (next weeks screening will be found in John Dalton building nearby).

Friday Featured Artist: TOM CHIMIAK

The humdrum of the week days begin to come to a close, the weekend is in sight, and it’s time for another Friday Featured Artist.

Some of you may have clocked a post which I put up a while ago
.  The post was of a video about Manchester and the Manchester School Of Samba.  It was an excellent piece of work which displayed imagery of the city beaitifully choreographed with the drumming of MSS.  If you not seen it yet, make sure you do.  It was created by a Mr. Tom Chimiak.

Tom, a 2nd year student from Staffordshire University studying Experimental Film Production, is primarily a film maker and photographer.  As he pointed out himself, Tom’s portfolio is currently on the smaller side due to the fact he’s only just begun building up a body of work, so be sure to have a look through and keep tabs on the chap for new projects!

You can find Tom’s video portfolio here, and his photography portfolio here.  Plus you can also stalk him here.

If you would like to submit your work for a possible feature on the website please email sandbar_manchester@live.com with a link to your online portfolio along with a 10 - 50 word description of yourself and/or your body of work.

And now…

…some words and video from The Manchester School of Samba.  Great video!

New Season of Trauma Film Screenings… not at sandbar…
As some of you know, sandbar offers societies discounts as well as support in certain projects, one of those said societies is Trauma Screenings.  Every Monday in MMU Lecture theatre around 6pm there’s a short presentation and film screening which is free to one and all, you don’t even need to be a student.
The seasons have been wide and diverse, from whimsy, grit and violence of Scottish Underdog films to the tongue in cheek and colourful play that is Mondo Trash.  Last season saw lecturer Dr. Mike Dempsy delivering a fantastic analytical presentation around the Del Toro films (pictured above), and now with Emma-Reetta Koivunen’s “Finnish Families On Films” occurring next I highly recommend checking out their site, found here, and popping over if you haven’t already.
Don’t feel intimidated either.  You don’t need to have spent the last five to ten years studying films to get involved.  The group pops over to sandbar for a chinwag and free pizza after each show, and they are always looking for motivated and passionate volunteers to put together new seasons.
